Harry Potter is a fantasy book and film series centered on a young wizard’s coming-of-age in a world hidden alongside our own. Written by J.K. Rowling, the original seven novels follow Harry from age eleven to seventeen, beginning with *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* (also known as *Sorcerer’s Stone* in the U.S.) and ending with *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*. The story opens with Harry, an orphan mistreated by his non-magical relatives, the Dursleys, discovering he is a wizard. He learns that the dark wizard Lord Voldemort murdered his parents, attempted to kill him as a baby, and mysteriously vanished when the curse rebounded. This event made Harry famous in the wizarding world as “The Boy Who Lived.” Most of the series is set at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a magical boarding school divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Harry is sorted into Gryffindor and quickly befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who become his closest allies. Other key characters include headmaster Albus Dumbledore, the morally complex Severus Snape, and Draco Malfoy, Harry’s rival. Each book combines a school-year mstery with a deepening war against Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters. Themes mature along with the characters: early novels mix adventure and humor with hints of darkness, while later boks delve into trauma, propaganda, authoritarianism, and sacrifice. Friendship, loyalty, choice, and the corrupting nature of power are central concerns. The series repeatedly contrasts love and empathy with bigotry and fear, especially through its depiction of “pure-blood” supremacy and the persecution of Muggle-born witches and wizards. The final installments reveal hidden layers of the past—Snape’s true loyalties, Dumbledore’s youthful ambitions, and the full story of Harry’s connection to Volemort. The narrative culminates in the Battle of Hogwarts, where Harry willingly faces death and ultimately survives, enabling Voldemort’s defeat. Beyond the core novels and eight-film adaptation, the frchise includes companion books, the *Fantastic Beasts* films, stage play *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*, theme parks, and a vast global fan culture that continues to reinterpret and expand the wizarding world.
